Lactose-Free Is Not Milk-Free: Reading a Snack Package

Lactose-Free Is Not Milk-Free: Reading a Snack Package
A lactose-free claim does not by itself answer whether a product contains milk. Identify the information needed before choosing a snack.

Understand the basic difference
Lactose is milk sugar, while milk allergy concerns milk proteins. Lactose intolerance and milk allergy are different conditions. A lactose-free product may still contain milk ingredients and is not automatically a substitute for someone with milk allergy.

Read ingredients and declarations
Check milk information in the ingredients and allergen statement, including cross-contact warnings. Front-of-pack words such as plant-based, light or diet do not replace this review.

Make a family reference card
Agree with the care team which ingredients must be avoided and which details should be checked. Share the card with relatives and the school so everyone asks the same relevant questions.

Ask about the exact product
Send the supplier the product name, flavour, size and label photograph when details are missing. Do not assume every flavour has identical ingredients, and review the current pack when formulations change.

Do not use food trials to diagnose allergy
Discuss suitable alternatives and any food-group exclusions with the clinician. An option suitable for one person may not suit another.
Save the distinction: lactose and milk declarations answer different questions.
